4 Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep from Your Waco Dentist & Medical Office

1. Go to Sleep at the Same Time

The easiest way to improve sleep is to establish a routine. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day for several weeks. Even if you’re not sleeping the entire time, stay in bed, and even if you’re tired at the end of the scheduled time, get up. This can be frustrating for patients who have insomnia, but consistency will help your body reset and allow you to sleep soundly.

2. Recognize Signs of Disordered Sleep

The most common sleep disorders are insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea. These disorders need to be diagnosed with a sleep test that will monitor your vitals during the night measuring the length of your sleep, incidents of apnea (the cessation of breathing), and other factors that impact the quality of sleep. Following a sleep study, a trusted sleep physician will review your results and provide a recommendation for ongoing treatment. You should let our team know right away, if you recognize any of the common warning signs of sleep disorders, including:

  • Loud, chronic snoring
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Waking periodically through the night
  • Waking out of breath or gasping for air
  • Chronic morning headaches
  • Waking with dry mouth or hoarse throat

3. Follow Your Treatment Plan Consistently

The effects of sleep deprivation are cumulative, and so are positive health affects you receive from deep sleep. This will allow you to achieve more and better sleep, and rejuvenate your body, even if you don’t see results immediately.
