Although it used to be a rare sight just a decade ago, now, it’s common to see people of ALL ages wearing braces. In fact, it has been estimated that over four million people in the United States alone wear braces – and a fourth of these people are actually adults!
If you need dental braces, we recommend visiting one of our orthodontists. An orthodontist is a dentist who, in addition to getting training in dentistry, has also obtained advanced orthodontic training. Orthodontics itself is the dental practice of inserting and removing various types of dental braces. Your orthodontist can help to straighten misaligned teeth and improve your bite by correcting the way your teeth come together.
What are braces?
Dental braces are devices that are used to align and straighten teeth; as well as to help position the teeth with regard to a person’s bite. They are most commonly made up of metal wire and the metal brace that gets glued to each individual tooth. Tiny rubber bands are used to strap the wires into place, and the tightening of wires is used to move the teeth into place.
What are the purpose of braces?
There are various reasons why people need to wear braces.
Correcting crooked teeth and gaps in teeth
While there are a few people who are fortunate enough to have perfect, straight teeth and a perfectly aligned bite – most of us have crooked teeth to some extent. Crooked teeth can cause greater issues than just being unattractive – food particles build-up between your teeth while you go about eating and drinking during the day, and it tends to be worse in those with crooked teeth. Many people also have problems with teeth that are too spaced out. In this case, braces are used to pull teeth together to reduce gaps and align teeth together.
Correcting misaligned jaws or malocclusion (a bad bite)
Some people have what’s known as a misaligned jaw – usually, this presents itself in a underbite or an overbite – or malocclusion (aka a bad bite). Misaligned jaws and bad bites cause many different issues, depending on how bad it is. Everything from having trouble chewing properly, experiencing pain or stiffness, breathing problems and trouble to sleep, difficulties with speech, and experiencing extreme low self-esteem could be problems these individuals face. Braces are one of the first steps to getting these issues under control, in some extreme cases, jaw surgery may be recommended.

Keeping your teeth healthy
When you have dental problems like crooked teeth and bad bites, keeping your teeth clean and healthy can be difficult. Plaque is harder to fight, flossing can be difficult to impossible, and the risk of acquiring oral diseases is higher. Some of these diseases include tooth decay, gum diseases, and tongue problems. Braces can help to mitigate these issues by fixing the cause or root of the problem.
Enabling you to eat properly
You will note that if you have misaligned teeth, eating your daily meals can be a difficult task. Some people with misaligned jaws or bad bites experience pain and stiffness while chewing, making every-day life uncomfortable. On top of that, if you cannot chew your food properly your digestion process is likely to get affected. Again, braces can be the solution to this issue.
If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort while eating, call 1-844-9MEDICO or fill out an appointment request form to schedule your FREE CONSULTATION and see whether braces are right for you.
This might be a strange one to add in here – after all, not too long ago they were known as “embarrassing” and were often associated with negative stereotypes… But gone are the days where it’s considered strange and ugly – having braces is now considered normal. On top of that, they can be the first step towards a smile you can truly be proud of – a healthy smile. Self-confidence is essential to an individual’s health, and having bad teeth can prevent someone from smiling, laughing, and enjoying life out of fear of ridicule or being made fun of. If you aren’t proud of your smile, talk to one of our dentists about the best ways to improve it, and learn if braces are right for you.
Who needs braces?
Children and adults of all ages can be considered for braces. Children need them for various reasons. With the advancement in orthodontics and dentistry, more children are receiving dental care in order to help their adult teeth grow properly. For most children, orthodontic treatment normally begins when they are 10-15 years old. Children younger than 10 can also be considered for braces on an an individual case depending on their needs. It is important to note that this kind of treatment is both proactive and reactive. It aims at fixing one problem now so that your child’s teeth can stay healthy for the rest of his or her life.
Reasons why braces are considered:
- Shifting jaw
- Irregular loss of baby teeth
