What Does Medicaid Cover For Children In Texas?

When it comes to Children’s Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), the federal government has granted each state the ability to create their own programs, albeit within the parameters established by federal guidelines.

Both services provide no-cost or very low-cost health insurance for eligible applicants throughout the Lone Star State. To date, both programs have provided medical coverage to over 4 million Texans, comprising nearly half of the state’s children.

Most of Texas’ Medicaid services and all of their CHIP services are contracted between the state and managed care organizations that have been licensed by the Texas Department of Insurance. The plans themselves contract with doctors and other providers to form a network that members can access.

What Is Covered?

According to the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, Medicaid and CHIP programs operating in the state are “required to provide all covered medically necessary services” to all members. Once approved, children enrolled in either program will be able to obtain comprehensive medical treatment, regular immunizations, and even regular dental care. So if you are thinking about enrolling your children in the Medicaid or CHIP programs, here is a list of some of the things that are covered.

Dental Visits

Both CHIP and Children’s Medicaid cover dentist visits, cleanings, and fillings. This should ensure that your child is able to maintain proper dental hygiene and treat any unforeseen issues with the utmost efficiency. Our dentists at Medico M.D. proudly accepts CHIP and Medicaid insurance.

The benefits afforded under Medicaid are known as the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSTD) benefit. While it does include oral screenings, a referral to a dentist is mandated for every child. At a minimum, dental services include pain and infection treatment and prevention, teeth restoration, and dental health maintenance—all necessary components of a happy and healthy lifestyle.

Your Doctors, Your Choice

No matter whether your child is enrolled in CHIP or Children’s Medicaid, you are able to select the doctor of your choice. Both programs cover regular checkups and office visits. Additionally, they also cover hospital care and related services, x-rays, medical supplies, and laboratory tests.

Pre-Existing Conditions

You are probably asking yourself, what about pre-existing conditions? Fortunately, those are covered too, so you do not need to worry about an earlier illnesses posing a problem for future treatment. Further, both programs also cover special health needs, prescription drugs, and vaccines. This means you can meaningfully address your child’s medical needs instead of wading through endless tunnels of bureaucracy.

What About The Costs?

If your child qualifies for Children’s Medicaid, there is no cost for any service. On the other hand, if your child qualifies for CHIP the fee will vary in accordance with your income. However, it costs less than $50 per family to enroll each year. If you visit the doctor, incur a co-pay, or need a prescription, your costs could range anywhere from $3 to $5 for lower income families and $20 to $35 for those with higher incomes.
